In the vibrant heart of Soho, Ilona Rose House is an architectural masterpiece built on the former site of the famous Foyle's Bookshop on Charing Cross Road. The design by MATT Architecture and SODA Studio blends harmoniously into the cultural and historical surroundings and creates a lively place for working, meeting and creativity. The Ilona Rose House reinterprets the traditional architecture of Soho and combines historical echoes with a modern design language. Particular attention is paid to the harmonious integration of working, living and leisure areas. Bright, flexible interior spaces, an impressive atrium and green roof terraces ensure a pleasant indoor climate and offer users an inspiring place to spend time, in keeping with the creative diversity of the district.
We supplied several key elements for the realization of the striking façade, including the elegantly curved brass panels made from our natural-coloured POHL Bronze. In addition, there are numerous individually manufactured, filigree rose reliefs made of double-patinated brass from our POHL Bronze. A particular challenge was to execute the transitions between all these elements so precisely that a visually seamless overall picture was created despite the complex geometry and the lively relief. We also produced the rose relief facade of the upper two floors in powder-coated steel as an economical value engineering solution. At the rear of the house, there are also custom-made louvers with custom perforations, also made of double-patinated brass, which serve as ventilation grilles and covers.
The artistically designed facade is a central design element of the Ilona Rose House. With detailed rose motifs made of POHL bronze patinated brass, our powder-coated steel and GRC, it picks up on Soho's artistic tradition and interprets it in a contemporary way. Depending on the incidence of light, the surface unfolds a lively dynamic, from warm, gleaming brass in the sunshine to a restrained, elegant appearance on overcast days, making the building a characterful part of the cityscape.
The Ilona Rose House was consistently developed according to high ecological standards and was awarded BREEAM "Excellent" certification. The extensive greening of the roof areas supports biodiversity and improves the microclimate. At the same time, durable materials and energy-efficient building technology ensure sustainable use. The project thus combines aesthetic quality with future-oriented construction methods.
